Goal Setting

Support your little learner by setting monthly goals!

Setting monthly goals is a great way for children to….

  • reflect on their strengths and struggles
  • practice having a growth mindset “This feels hard for me now, but if I practice I will get better!”
  • have a sense of control, a sense of purpose, and self-motivation to improve

Together, choose a home or school skill that is feeling hard to write an “I will” goal

Examples:

“I will go to bed at 7pm every night”

“I will complete my homework after dinner each night, so I can relax after”

“I will keep my room clean by picking it up each evening before bed”

“I will practice my sight words for 10 minutes each night”

Follow these easy steps to help your child set and achieve goals each month:

  1. Pick a goal together
  2. Write it, decorate it, and post it somewhere for them to see!
  3. Check in with the goal once in a while
  4. At the end of the month reflect with them on their progress.
    • What felt easy?
    • What still feels hard?
    • Did they meet the goal?
    • Should we keep this goal or set a new goal next month?

Make goal setting a family thing! Have everyone set a goal, so you can model making growth.
